Reduce Data Leakage in AI

Three techniques that protect your data.

PII Detection

Automatic detection of personal data like names, emails, phone numbers, credit cards and addresses in real time.

Prompt Filtering

Configurable rules block or mask sensitive data before it reaches the AI model.

Response Scanning

AI responses are also checked -- so no sensitive data appears in the output.

Background on threat scenarios around AI systems is provided by the EU Cybersecurity Agency report ENISA — AI Cybersecurity Challenges (Threat Landscape).

Frequently asked questions about AI data leakage

What is data leakage in the AI context?+

Data leakage describes information — such as personal data, trade secrets or internal documents — leaving the organization unintentionally and reaching external AI models or vendors. Typical triggers include text pasted into prompts, uploaded files or uncontrolled tool integrations.

How does data leakage typically occur with AI usage?+

Common paths: employees paste confidential content directly into a chat prompt, upload documents to a public tool, use private AI accounts, or work with tools whose processing location and training policy are unclear. Concrete risks depend on the vendor, contract terms and internal usage.

What is a PII filter and which data can it detect?+

A PII filter analyses text for personal data such as names, email and postal addresses, phone numbers, credit cards, IBAN, social security numbers and further configurable patterns. HOVIGuard inspects inputs and can warn, mask or block depending on configuration — accuracy depends on data type, language and configuration.

Which protective mechanisms can an AI gateway provide?+

An AI gateway can layer multiple controls: PII and content detection on prompts and uploads, configurable filter and block rules, audit logging of every interaction and centralised model and access management. These tools support the reduction of data leakage risks — they do not replace a legal assessment in the individual case.

Can HOVIGuard prevent data leakage completely?+

No — full prevention cannot be technically guaranteed. HOVIGuard reduces risk through several protection layers (MultiLayer Data Shield), audit trail and administrative controls. Effectiveness additionally depends on internal policies, training and the chosen configuration. See DPA and data protection documentation for details.
